Charlie Rickett - Artist
Charlie graduated as a Fine Artist from Goldsmiths College in London in 2004. She then became Artist in Residence at Cranleigh Arts Centre for six months. She has had numerous exhibitions since in London, Surrey and Kent and also exhibits with the online Art Gallery www.degreeart.com <http://www.degreeart.com>
Charlie’s practice revolves around a discourse on painting; these are figurative and stylised to produce images of mainly solitary women. Most of the pieces evolve from a personal process of performance and photography, which Charlie transforms through the medium of paint to explore notions of femininity and identity.
Deeply involved with the materiality of the paint itself, Charlie is interested in how it can reflect and enhance the conceptual ideas she is concerned with. The subject matter of the work often portrays elements of glamour and seduction: within the poses chosen, the clothing and the expressions. It also raises questions concerning the conflicts a woman may feel within society through the desire to present with a certain image - and simultaneously rebelling against it. Are women being empowered to choose or merely conforming to pressures?
The titling of the work is essential in the contemplation of any of Charlie’s paintings. In naming them they become whole entities; the names chosen reflecting elements of their identities.
Charlie works from her studio based in Godalming, Surrey.
Charlie has also tutored art workshops for over six years. She is currently co-ordinating a Youth Café and working for a street processions company.
